Approach

Psychiatric problems can be connected to every part of your body and life.

You may notice a psychiatric problem first by feeling dissatisfaction with life, the inability or difficulty taking care of daily activities, the loss of a previous ability, not progressing in your life and work, or ending up where you don’t want to be. Other people may notice your problem before you do. While most people have these feelings or difficulties, some of us get trapped by our problems and cannot overcome them on our own. We need outside intervention to help us progress.

Attentive psychiatric treatment begins with attempts to identify the factors that are working together to perpetuate your problem. These factors may include your genetics and brain physiology, your memories, other medical illnesses, life stressors, your diet and fitness level, drug use, relationship difficulties, the people in your environment, your assumptions about the world, your ideas about good and evil, and many other factors.

It may take time to pin down the sources of your problem. Some of these factors can be modified and treated, but others cannot. For instance, your genetics cannot currently be changed, although knowing your genetics may potentially direct treatment. Psychiatric medications clearly modify brain and body physiology. You can challenge and overcome your assumptions about the world and yourself.

Dr. Burock will work with you to identify and change the factors in your life that can be modified. His primary interventions are medications and talk therapy. He may recommend psychiatric medicine, if indicated, or a form of talk therapy to address your problem. He may refer you to someone better suited to your specific needs. He will work with your other physicians if appropriate. Although not a nutritionist or physical trainer, he may work with you to find a healthier lifestyle.
